As the villagers tore up the floorboards to clear out his belongings, they discovered something astonishing. Hidden beneath the floor were numerous large earthen pots. Inside those pots, packed to the brim, was an enormous fortune in coins.
“Stingy Roku-san was hiding all this money!” the villagers gasped in shock. But then, an elderly man who knew Roku-san’s past stepped forward to reveal the truth.
“Roku-san was never stingy for his own sake,” the old man explained. “When he was a young man, this river flooded heavily, and his beloved family was swallowed by the raging waters. Ever since that tragic day, Roku-san swore an oath: ‘I will build a sturdy stone bridge that can never be washed away, so that no one crossing this river will ever have to suffer such sorrow again.’ He had been saving that money alone, for decades, to fulfill that promise.”
Hearing this, the villagers were deeply ashamed of their shallow judgment and wept bitterly. They were entirely moved by the unconditional love of an old man who, despite being despised as a “miser,” prayed silently for the safety of others and continued to bow in humility.
The villagers inherited Roku-san’s noble will. They added their own donations to his lifelong savings and built a magnificent, sturdy stone bridge over the Shakujii River. To honor the gratitude and respect for Roku-san, who bowed to people every single day, they named the bridge “Getobashi” (The Bridge of the Lowered Head). This bridge still exists in Tokyo today.
