July 20th is “Marine Day”: Understanding the Heart of Japan, an Island Nation

“What’s Today’s Special Day?” Series

The Origins and History of Marine Day (Umi no Hi)

July 20th holds immense historical significance in Japan as “Marine Day” (Umi no Hi). While it is currently observed on the third Monday of July due to the Happy Monday System, it was originally established on July 20th to commemorate the safe return of Emperor Meiji to Yokohama Port in 1876 (Meiji 9) aboard the steamboat “Meiji Maru” after a tour of the Tohoku region. Initially known as “Marine Memorial Day,” it officially became a national holiday in 1996.

Many countries around the world have public holidays, but Japan is unique as the only nation to have a national holiday specifically dedicated to giving thanks to the ocean itself. The law officially defines the purpose of the day: “To give thanks for the ocean’s blessings and to pray for the prosperity of the maritime nation of Japan.”

Deciphering Japanese Spirituality and Culture through the Ocean

Located at the eastern edge of the Eurasian continent, Japan is an island nation completely surrounded by four distinct bodies of water: the Pacific Ocean, the Sea of Japan, the East China Sea, and the Sea of Okhotsk. This geographical reality has profoundly shaped Japan’s history, food culture, and the spirituality of its people.

Since ancient times, Japanese people have viewed the sea as a “sacred place” and a “boundary with the spiritual world.” In Shinto belief, there are gods of the sea known as “Watatsumi,” and shrines and Torii gates are built along coasts nationwide to pray for safe voyages and bountiful catches. The iconic floating Torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine is a perfect symbol of this unique Japanese faith, where nature and the divine become one.

However, while the ocean provides abundant blessings, it is also a source of natural threats such as typhoons and tsunamis. Because the Japanese deeply understand the terrifying power of the sea, they chose not to try and conquer nature, but rather to hold it in awe and live in harmony with it. Traditional Japanese cuisine (Washoku), epitomized by sushi and sashimi, is born from this exact spirituality—receiving fresh seafood in its natural state with profound gratitude.

Marine Day is not merely a day that marks the beginning of summer leisure. It is a day to reaffirm the fundamental Japanese sense of beauty and perspective on life and death: “gratitude” for nature’s blessings and “awe” for its immense power.
