The Story: A Lost Traveler and a Grateful Cat
Long ago, a skilled hunter ventured deep into the mountains of Aso. While tracking his prey, the weather suddenly turned violent. Enveloped in thick fog, he completely lost his way. As night fell and a freezing wind began to howl, he prepared himself for death by exposure. Suddenly, a magnificent mansion with an imposing gate appeared before his eyes.
“It’s impossible for such a massive estate to exist deep in these mountains,” he thought suspiciously. However, unable to endure the biting cold, the hunter knocked on the gate. To his surprise, he was greeted by beautiful maids dressed in elegant silk kimonos. They were incredibly hospitable, guiding him into a warm room and serving him a lavish feast with sake. From the adjacent great hall, he could hear the sound of shamisen music and cheerful laughter; a grand banquet was clearly underway.
Just as the hunter began to relax and let the sake warm his blood, one of the young, beautiful maids approached him. Glancing around cautiously, she whispered in a hushed voice.
“Old man, do you recognize me? I am ‘Mike,’ the calico cat you kept at your house until a few years ago. In truth, this is the Kingdom of Cats, gathered from the human world. Tonight, a great banquet is being held for the Cat King. If they catch the scent of a human, you will instantly be captured by the King and eaten. You must flee immediately.”
The hunter sobered up instantly, as if doused in freezing water. The beautiful maid before him was his beloved pet cat, whom he had raised with affection before she suddenly disappeared one day. Guided by Mike, the hunter stealthily slipped out through the mansion’s back door. But soon, terrifying growls of feral cats echoed from behind: “There’s a human!” “Don’t let him escape!”
Mike pushed the hunter’s back firmly and shouted, “Never look back! Run straight down the mountain!” Driven by pure instinct, the hunter dashed through the dark forest, his skin torn by thorns. The horrifying yowls closed in on his ears, but just as the morning sun began to rise, the voices of his pursuers vanished like an illusion. When the hunter finally regained his senses, he found himself collapsed at the entrance of his own village. It is said that from that day forward, he never ventured deep into the mountains again, and he treated all the cats in his village with the utmost kindness for the rest of his life.
Deep Analysis: Why Do Cats Gather in the Mountains?
This story is not merely a ghost story. Why did the cats build a kingdom deep in the mountains? In ancient Japan, there was a widespread belief that when animals live a long time, they acquire spiritual powers and transform into Yokai (supernatural monsters, such as Bakeneko or Nekomata). While dogs are loyal to humans and easily integrate into society, cats always retain a hint of the wild, remaining free-spirited and mysterious. The feline habit of acting as adorable pets during the day but vanishing into the night sparked the human imagination: “Perhaps they have another society—a secret kingdom—invisible to humans.”
Furthermore, this tale contains the crucial theme of “Ongaeshi” (repaying a debt of gratitude). Even within the terrifying realm of Yokai, Mike never forgot the love she had received and risked her life to save her former owner. This portrays the gentle Japanese perspective that animals, too, possess rich emotions and a strong sense of duty, just like humans.

“The Cats of Nekodake” is deeply intertwined with Japanese “Animism” (the belief in eight million gods). The Japanese have historically believed that spirits dwell in everything—mountains, rivers, rocks, plants, and animals. Mountains, in particular, were revered as sacred places, but also feared as an “Otherworld” where humans should not casually trespass.
Mount Nekodake in Aso, with its bizarre, jagged appearance, has long been known as a sacred mountain for ascetic monks. The concept that an independent world of animals exists in the depths of the mountains—where human rules do not apply—expresses an absolute awe of nature. Humans live by the blessings of nature, but one wrong step can lead to being swallowed by it. This folktale serves as a powerful warning of that boundary.

猟師が安堵し、酒に酔いしれそうになったその時です。一人の若く美しい女中が彼のそばに歩み寄り、周囲を気にするように小声で囁きました。
「おじいさん、私のことがわかりますか？ 私は数年前まで、あなたの家で飼われていた三毛猫の『ミケ』です。実は、ここは人間の世界から集まった猫たちの国なのです。今夜は猫の王様の大宴会が開かれています。もし人間の匂いに気づかれれば、あなたはたちまち王様に捕らえられ、食べられてしまうでしょう。すぐに逃げてください」
猟師は背筋に冷水を与えられたように酔いが覚めました。目の前の美しい女中は、かつて自分が愛情を込めて育て、ある日突然いなくなった愛猫だったのです。猟師はミケの案内で、屋敷の裏口からこっそりと抜け出しました。しかし、背後からは「人間がいるぞ！」「逃がすな！」という恐ろしい野良猫たちの唸り声が響き始めました。
ミケは猟師の背中を強く押し、「決して振り返らず、真っ直ぐに山を下りてください！」と叫びました。猟師は無我夢中で、茨に肌を切り裂かれながらも夜の山を駆け下りました。恐ろしい鳴き声が耳元まで迫りましたが、やがて朝日が昇ると同時に、追手の声は幻のように消え去りました。猟師が気がつくと、彼は自分の住む村の入り口に倒れていました。それ以来、猟師は山に深く入ることをやめ、村の猫たちを生涯大切に扱ったと言われています。
