Introduction: Folktales as Cultural Mirrors

“Once upon a time…”—these words mark the beginning of countless Japanese folktales. But these stories are more than childhood entertainment. They reflect the values, worldview, and emotional depth of Japanese culture.

In this series, I’ll introduce classic Japanese folktales in a way that’s accessible to international readers, while exploring the cultural and philosophical layers beneath them. We begin with one of the most iconic: Momotaro.

📖 The Story: A Boy Born from a Peach

Long ago, in a quiet village, there lived an old man and an old woman. One day, the old man went to gather firewood in the mountains, while the old woman went to wash clothes in the river.

As she scrubbed, a giant peach came floating down the stream—“donburako, donburako,” it bobbed along.

“What a magnificent peach! I’ll take it home and share it with my husband,” she said.

But when they tried to cut it open—

Pop! Out jumped a healthy baby boy.

“Waaah! Waaah!”

Stunned but overjoyed, the couple believed he was a gift from the gods. They named him Momotaro, meaning “Peach Boy,” and raised him with love.

Momotaro grew strong and kind. One day, he heard villagers talking about demons (oni) who lived on a distant island and raided their homes.

“I’ll go to Oni Island and defeat them!” Momotaro declared.

The old woman made him millet dumplings (kibi dango), and the old man gave him a sword. Off he went.

On his journey, Momotaro met a dog, a monkey, and a pheasant.

“Where are you headed, Momotaro?” they asked.

“To Oni Island, to fight the demons.”

“Give us a dumpling and we’ll join you!”

With his three animal companions, Momotaro sailed to the island. There, the demons were feasting and drinking. The team launched a surprise attack, fought bravely, and captured the demon chief.

“We surrender! We’ll return everything we stole!”

Momotaro brought back treasure and peace to the village. He was hailed as a hero.

日本昔話シリーズ①｜桃太郎：鬼退治に込められた勇気と絆の物語

はじめに：昔話は文化の鏡

「昔々、あるところに…」という言葉で始まる日本の昔話は、単なる子ども向けの物語ではありません。そこには、日本人の価値観、自然観、そして人間関係の理想が込められています。

このシリーズでは、日本の昔話を海外の方にもわかりやすく紹介しながら、その背景にある文化や哲学を紐解いていきます。第一回は、日本人なら誰もが知っている「桃太郎」です。

物語：桃から生まれた少年の冒険

昔々、あるところに、おじいさんとおばあさんが住んでいました。おじいさんは山へ柴刈りに、おばあさんは川へ洗濯に行きました。

ある日、おばあさんが川で洗濯をしていると、川上から大きな桃がどんぶらこ、どんぶらこと流れてきました。

「まあ、なんて大きな桃でしょう。おじいさんと一緒に食べましょう」

おばあさんは桃を家に持ち帰り、二人で割ろうとしたその時——

パカッ！なんと、桃の中から元気な男の子が飛び出してきました。

「おぎゃあ！おぎゃあ！」

驚いたおじいさんとおばあさんは、神様からの授かりものだと思い、その子を「桃太郎」と名付け、大切に育てました。

桃太郎はすくすくと育ち、力持ちで心優しい青年になりました。ある日、村人たちが困っている話を耳にします。

「鬼ヶ島の鬼たちが村を荒らして、宝物を奪っていくんだ…」

桃太郎は決意します。「僕が鬼ヶ島へ行って、鬼を退治してくる！」

おばあさんはきびだんごを作り、おじいさんは腰に刀をつけて送り出しました。

道中、桃太郎は犬、猿、キジに出会います。

「どこへ行くんだい、桃太郎さん？」

「鬼ヶ島へ鬼退治に行くんだ」

「それなら、きびだんごを一つください。お供します！」

こうして、桃太郎は三匹の仲間とともに鬼ヶ島へ向かいました。

鬼ヶ島に着くと、鬼たちは大宴会の真っ最中。桃太郎たちは力を合わせて戦い、ついに鬼の頭領を捕まえます。

「もう悪いことはしません！宝物も全部返します！」

桃太郎たちは宝物を持ち帰り、村に平和が戻りました。村人たちは大喜び。桃太郎は英雄として讃えられました。

桃太郎に込められた価値観

• 正義感と勇気：悪に立ち向かう姿は、日本人の道徳観の象徴です。
• 仲間との協力：異なる性格の動物たちと力を合わせることで、困難を乗り越える。
• 報酬と努力：努力の末に得られる宝物は、「努力は報われる」という教訓を伝えます。

桃太郎は岡山県のシンボルとしても知られています。岡山駅前には桃太郎像があり、観光資源として活用されています。
